• This program provides students with a detailed explanation of the Cospas-Sarsat international satellite distress alerting system.

    At the completion of this Unit students will:

    • Understand the development and operation of the Cospas-Sarsat distress beacon system
    • Explore the operation of the GEOSAR, LEOSAR and the new MEOSAR constellations
    • Examine how this system can aid the SAR coordinator during a SAR mission
    • Identify the differences between 406MHz (digital) and 121.5MHz (analogue) beacon signals
    • Discuss the difference in the Local and Global operational modes of Cospas-Sarsat
    • Identify beacon coding including country code
    • Understand the process of 'Notification of Country of Registration (NOCR)'
    • Identify the different sources of search and rescue intelligence available through the Cospas-Sarsat global system


  • This training has been specifically designed for the mining and exploration industry and for companies or organisations that operate in remote or isolated areas at home or abroad.

    Training focuses on providing company personnel with the skills and knowledge necessary to setup a company based search and rescue system and to initiate a timely response to reports of missing or overdue employees, aircraft or vessels.

    Our remote area training is tailored in consultation with the client to specifically meet their organisational needs relevant to the areas in which their employees operate and can cover any or all of the following areas:

    • The relevant national and international search and rescue system
    • Company search and rescue procedures
    • Emergency reporting requirements and points-of-contact
    • Roles and responsibilities of local SAR authorities
    • Flight following
    • Searching from the air
    • Distress beacons and location techniques

    • The search team leader
    • Search area calculation
    • Medical factors that affect survival such as hypothermia, hyperthermia, trauma and acute or chronic medical conditions

    Training can be delivered in the traditional classroom setting, through on-line distance learning using our virtual campus or a combination of both.

    Training Program: Search and Rescue Coordination

    Pre-requisites: "Introduction to Search and Rescue" (on-line delivery)

    Co-requisites: Nil

    Course Delivery: Classroom Training (Minimum student numbers required). SAR Coordination training is conducted in three separate streams of maritime, aviation and land search and rescue coordination. Please email us for a copy of individual program outlines.

    Duration: One week (Monday to Friday) for each stream.

    Location: LifeFlight Training Academy, Aviation Australia Campus Brisbane International Airport

    Course Award: Certificate of Completion - Search & Rescue Coordinator Training

    Group/Corporate Courses: Specialist training programs can be developed to specifically meet individual organisational training and skill requirements and include training in more than one stream.

    With a strong focus on command, control and coordination of search and rescue missions, this course is designed to train students to undertake the duties and responsibilities of a Search and Rescue Coordinator.
