SAR Training

Accurate drift modelling is fundamental to effective maritime search planning. This (6-week) online training course provides a practical introduction to the principles and processes used to estimate the movement and probable location of a person, vessel or other search object at sea.

Designed for a broad Search and Rescue (SAR) audience, the course takes participants through the development of a maritime datum, examining how wind, surface currents, leeway and other environmental influences combine to move a search object over time. Participants learn how uncertainty is incorporated into the planning process and how drift calculations contribute to defining an effective search area.

The course combines underpinning theory with practical exercises, including the manual calculation of maritime drift using the Australian National Search and Rescue Manual worksheets. Participants then apply the same principles using SAR Calculator Pro, reinforcing the relationship between sound SAR planning principles and the use of computer-based planning tools.

By the end of the course, participants will have a greater understanding of maritime datum drift modelling, be able to undertake basic drift calculations, interpret the resulting datum information, and apply that information to the development of maritime search areas.

The course is suitable for SAR personnel seeking to develop or strengthen their understanding of maritime search planning, from those new to drift modelling through to experienced practitioners wishing to refresh their knowledge of the underlying principles.
